A Clinical Analysis of the Island Pedicle Flap

Abstract
Inclinical application ofthe island flap, a flap must be met certain criteria in order to be given widespread acceptance. Among these are applicabilities in wide range of situation, presence of indentifiable blood vessels, easy dissection, and
minimal
donor-site morbidity.
Island flap is a very useful method of tretment for such situations in which cannot to be using a local flap because of scar tissues or irradiated tissues around the wound, and in which cannot to be using a free flap because of inadquacy of the
recipient vessels.
The ideal fingertip reconstruction should attempt to maintain legth, preserve nail function, and provide sensate soft tissue covering without pain during use. For those purposes, many island flap based on single neurovascular bundle were used for
finger
tip reconstruction.
A statistical analysis was carried out on 45 patients, who were treated by island pedicle flap at the department of Plastic and reconstructive Surgery, Kon-Kuk University, from January, 1989 to December, 1992. the island pedicle flaps have many
distinctive advantages over the conventional local flap. They have good blood supply and less risk of infection, provides well vascularized flap with a one-stage operation, no necessity of delay, far fewer limitation of flap-size and improves the
comfort of the operation, and allow early ambulation.
As compare with free flap, the advantages of the island flap are technically ease with a single operation, short hospitalization with cost less.
